Hearts are a glow in February.
Why? Well, not only does Valentine’s Day happen in February, but it is American Heart Month. Take time to do some healthy heart activities like taking regular walks, hiking the trails in our beautiful parks, or increasing your exercise regimen.
And ironically, it’s also Great American Pie Month! So, if you plan to eat that extra slice of yummy apple or cherry pie this month, take that extra walk for your heart’s sake!!
As for the other heart event, Valentine’s day is Sunday, February 14th.
St. Valentine’s Day contains a tradition based on both Christianity and ancient Roman history. Who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this tradition?
A popular legend says that Valentine was a Roman priest during the third century. The then Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than married men with families, presumably as they had less to care about or live for. So, he outlawed marriage for young soldiers. Valentine thought this to be unfair, so he defied Claudius and secretly performed marriages for young lovers. When Claudius discovered Valentine’s secret actions, he ordered the priest be put to death.
But where did Cupid come from? The little naked cherub launching arrows of love at unsuspecting lovers is a Roman God. Still, Cupid has his roots in Greek mythology as the God of love, Eros.
According to the Greek poets, Eros was a handsome immortal who enjoyed toying with both the Gods and men’s emotions. He would use his golden arrows to incite love. During the Hellenistic period, he was first portrayed as the mischievous, chubby child we have come to love to see on our Valentine’s Day cards.
Today, we send flowers, cards, candy, stuffed animals, and balloons to our significant others, our kids, moms, and dads. We bring candy to the office, give cards to our pals, and of course, even the school kids get into the action.
