Our Marshall Lions are working hard to be ready for the season. Their first game is away against the Wesclin team from Trenton, Illinois. Kick-off is at 7 p.m. on 8/25 in Trenton, so get the carpools ready. They will be playing one more away game before they bring it home to Marshall to take on Paris, Illinois, for their first home game on 9/8. Get your Lion’s gear out of the closet and get ready to rumble!

This weekend, Saturday, August 19, the Gaslight Art Colony held their reception for the opening of their next exhibit, The Fiber Art Show. This is the 4th annual of this particular show and will be featuring the work of our own local artists. This special juried show will feature original fiber works in concept and design. Artists 18 years and older, both amateur and professional, were eligible to enter.
The awards were given for – Best of Show, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and the winners will be announced soon. You have plenty of time to go and witness this amazing work. The show is on until September 9 and can be seen during the gallery’s regular business hours, Tue.10-1, Wed. 10-1, Thur. 10-4:30, Sat. 10-1.
The expert Juror for this exhibit is artist Jamie Willis who taught art in public schools for 30 years. Her art expertise is particularly in weaving and watercolor work; her art is found in private and public collections. She has taught and studied fiber art and quilting since 1986, and the Gaslight is thrilled to have her as the expert for this juried exhibit.

Become a Member of the Art Colony
There are memberships available for all ages and at various levels. Apply for an annual membership or renew yours online or by using Venmo. Checks are also accepted; print out the form on their website and send it in with your check. The annual membership costs just $5 for students, $25 for individuals, and $50 for families. You can be a Patron for $100, a Sponsor for $250, or at the Benefactor level for $500.
Applications are now being taken for the Ruth and Vaughn Jaenike Access to the Arts Grant!
The Ruth and Vaughn Jaenike Access to the Arts Grant is again available. Art organizations in the East Central Illinois region can apply for this grant from now until September 29, 2023.
The funds that are allocated by this grant are primarily restricted to the visual and/or performing arts. Priority is given to programs presented in the East Central Illinois counties of Coles, Douglas, Edgar, Clark, Cumberland, Effingham, Moultrie, and Shelby. This includes Eastern Illinois University, non-profit organizations, and schools but will not be awarded to individual artists.
Priority for funding will be given to programs that:
- Target general audiences, especially audiences recognized as underserved in terms of the arts.
- Have a strong educational component to introduce or explain the art form presented.
- Pilot projects or show promise of encouraging follow-up arts activities.
- Make use of Eastern Illinois University resources.
- Capitalize on a unique situation involving a noted artist, troupe, or ensemble.
- Show tangible project support (cash and/or in-kind) from the sponsoring entity and/or the targeted audience or community.

Marshall, Illinois, is gearing up for the Annual Marshall Autumn Fest.
Once again, our biggest event of the year is just around the corner. The weekend of September 15,16, and 17 will be our biggest Autumn Fest event in Marshall yet, with fantastic entertainment, parades, competitions, and fun for everyone.
