When the weather improves, and we think about spring, we often think about cleaning out the old to make room for the new. Garages, attics, and closets are on the radar for a much-needed clean-up. This is the time when we see yard sales pop up every weekend. What we think of as junk might be someone else’s treasure and vice versa. This is a great time of year to do a little shopping around the neighborhoods or to set up your own garage or yard sale to make a little extra money while purging some of those things you no longer need.
If you have books in good shape that you have already read, or maybe some CDs or DVDs, contact the Marshall Library and ask whether they can use them or know of a place where they can be used and enjoyed by others.
Clothes can usually be given to local charities, and also check with your church or other churches in the area to see if there are families in need of gently used garments. Those items can mean a lot to someone, so don’t just throw them out before exploring ways that your clothing items might be a treasure for someone else.
Tools are always a great find when garage-sale-ing. Check the yard sales before you spend money on a brand-new tool or piece of equipment, as there might be exactly what you need at a local yard sale.
Getting Rid of Bulk Items:
Some things are not meant to be saved, sold, or salvaged, so we look to dispose of them in the best and most conscientious ways. To that end, Marshall will be having its annual “City Wide Cleanup.” Marshall residents within the city limits can bring large items for disposal to the city garage at 1400 Archer Ave, Marshall, Illinois. Days and times to bring your items are April 20 – 24 from 7am till 4pm (April 23, you can also bring items from 4pm till 6pm), and April 25 from 7am till noon. This is a perk of being a Marshall resident, so take advantage of this excellent opportunity to get rid of bulk items.
While most things are okay to bring to the clean-up, the following items will not be accepted. Brush and yard waste, liquids, paint, fuel, oil, asbestos, medical waste, butane, propane or freon tanks, concrete, hazardous waste, tires, or electronics. Please do not bring dead animals, roadkill, or other debris to the clean-up.
Cleaning Services wanted in Marshall:
These local entities require cleaning services – Marshall City Hall, Harlan Hall, and the Marshall Public Library. If you or someone you know owns a cleaning company and is seeking the contract to do this work, the City of Marshall is now accepting bids for cleaning services for these buildings. Bid packets are available at City Hall or on the City’s webpage. https://marshall-il.com/bids/ All Bids are due by April 24 at 10:00 a.m., so get your bids in soon.
Water needs Spring cleaning, too:
Have you noticed a bit of a chlorine smell in your tap water lately? Don’t stress, it is just the Marshall Water Department hard at work. The flushing out of our fire hydrants throughout town started on April 13th and will continue for a few weeks as part of routine system maintenance. The chlorine smell in your water is temporary and is completely safe. You can continue to use the water for drinking and washing without any adverse effects. By doing this, our Water Department is helping maintain the clarity, quality, and performance of our water system.
