School’s Out for Summer Fun in Marshall, Illinois

The Memorial Day weekend fast approaches, and thoughts of long summer days and nights fill the heads of our Marshall students. Our high school seniors will walk the stage in cap and gown to get their much-coveted diplomas on Friday, May 24. The ceremony will be held in the McNary Gym at 806  6th St. in Marshall starting at 7 pm. There will be a lot of excitement as this kicks off the weekend of picnics, barbeques, and graduation celebrations, ending on Monday when we remember why we call this Memorial Day. The last official day of school will be Tuesday, May 28, and the summer will swing into full gear as school’s out soon.

On Memorial Day, if you live in Marshall or are visiting, you can hear The Marshall City Band as they perform at Memorial Day services at the Marshall American Legion. On this day, each year, we honor the memory of those we lost in battle who gave their lives to protect freedom worldwide. We also honor those who returned to us after serving our country. Please make sure you thank a service person or do something nice for them to let them know we are grateful for their sacrifices.

Outdoor Fun Abounds in Marshall, especially at the Community Pool

Marshall can boast some of the best parks in Illinois, where you can boat, fish, hike, and camp. These parks are especially great in the summer months when school’s out. But we are also blessed to have one of the best Community pools in the state. There is an awesome slide, climbing wall, and even an infinity pool area where you can walk right into the water.

The pool is open daily from 11 am to 4 pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 pm to 9 pm. You can buy a pass for the day for $5 or a Splash Pass for the whole summer for $65 for one person or $125 for two (add $35 for each additional family member). Water Aerobics are not included in the splash pass, but you can join in the healthy fun for $5 on Mondays through Wednesdays from 5 pm to 6 pm. You can’t bring food into the pool. Still, there is a concession stand with super affordable prices on pizza, nachos, sweets, and beverages for purchase.

You can also arrange a pool party during pool hours with a reserved space for your guests, who will be given access to the Hippo or Monkey pavilion for two hours. The four packages, starting at $50 each, include a pavilion with four tables and benches. Food is included in the higher-priced packages but must be enjoyed in the pavilion area. No outside food or drinks (no alcohol) can be brought in, except for birthday cakes. All partygoers will need to pay an admission fee even if they are not planning to swim.

If you want the pool all to yourselves, a semi-private or private party can be arranged. Semi-private rentals are $250 and allow two hours of swim and party time for up to 150 guests with full access to the Lion or Monkey pavilion, which provides tables and benches. Note that you will share the pool facilities with another party.

The price for a private party is $400, which includes three hours of swim and party time for up to 400 guests and access to the entire facility from 6 pm to 9 pm. What a fun way to celebrate a special occasion on a hot summer night once school’s out.

Friday Nights in Marshall are the Place to Be

Once again, the Marshall Farmers Market will be gracing the area around downtown Marshall’s pavilion starting Friday, June 7—vendors, food, and music from the legendary Marshall City Band. The Marshall City Band is the oldest continuously operating band in the entire state of Illinois. This is their 149th year in existence, which began in 1875. The band consists of  55 dedicated musicians from all over the Wabash Valley. It may be hard to believe, but they spend about 3,000 hours each summer preparing, rehearsing, and performing at their many concerts. You can see them for free every Friday night in the summer months at the Bandstand on the Courthouse grounds after the Farmer’s Market winds down. Bring blankets, camp chairs, and the whole family.

Marshall is always the place to be in the summer months, so if you’re looking for a great place for a weekend getaway or a staycation, head to Marshall, Illinois, and get in on the fun.
