This is the weekend that marks the end of summer for most of us. Labor Day weekend makes us think of summers past, that bit of excitement mixed with dread in our belly as we got ready to face the new school year. The weekend brings barbeques, picnics, and pool parties for one last blast before we prepare for fall and cooler weather, bright autumnal colors, falling to the ground. Soon we will be raking them into piles for the kids to run through. The harvest crops will be ready, and before we know it, we will be thinking about Halloween, Thanksgiving, and a fall festival.
Labor Day Weekend Fall Festival
But first, we celebrate here in Marshall, starting with Labor Day. The holiday is always celebrated on the first Monday in September as a day to recognize American workers, and we American’s take it seriously. Ironically, on Labor Day, we do no labor. Instead, why not take this opportunity to do outdoor rest and relaxation activities. It’s a great weekend to go out to one of the area’s great parks. Take the whole family on a lakeside picnic or hike. Fire up the grill and make that perfect steak, roast the corn that is finally perfect for the picking, and slice those ripe red tomatoes and the last of the watermelon. Make a feast to remember for the whole family.
National Fall Hat Month
September is National Fall Hat month, and soon we will need them to keep our noggin’s warm. It’s also the month to celebrate honey. Get to your local produce store and buy some local honey. It’s a healthy alternative to refined sugar and is a home remedy to help keep those allergies in check. Great in hot tea on a cool evening or to sweeten some rib-sticking oatmeal at breakfast time.
The local stores of downtown Marshall are decorating their windows in anticipation of the biggest event of the year, the Marshall Autumn Fest! Traditionally held every year on the third weekend in September, this is the event everyone waits for. This year, the dates are September 17, 18, and 19. Look to see the store windows of Marshall as they show off their decorating skills in honor of the celebration of the fall festival and to show their community spirit.
The events of the weekend are plentiful. There are fish fries, beer gardens, food trucks, arts and crafts and music, music, music. The Marshal Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Tournament is one of the kick-off events. The annual Autumn Fest Parade is one of the weekend’s highlights and is not to be missed. That will kick off at 11 am on Saturday, right after the Marshall Rotary Pancake breakfast. See your friends and neighbors as they show off their floats, enjoy the marching bands and civic groups. Sunday, the music and fun continue, and Marshall will be treated to a car, truck, and motorcycle show.
We love our town, and we take pride in it. As we come into the Fall, we know that the beauty of life in Marshall is something to celebrate. We welcome visitors to our annual Autumn Fest and to experience all we have to offer not just at the fall festival but all year long. We are very proud of our amazing parks, our great stores, antique shops, and restaurants. But mostly, we celebrate the harvest, the abundance of not only the crops we grow but of the friendships we create, the camaraderie we experience, the fun we share.
Marshall Schools Fall Festival
School is in full swing. Football games, hot chocolate, and cheering will add to the excitement of the crisp fall air. The days will start to get shorter. The nights will get cooler, and we will watch the year wind down to a close. It has been a rough year for many of us, but let’s put all that behind us and have fun this month. Let’s dance together, share food, enjoy great music, and celebrate the end of the summer in the way we do every year. Together. See you at the fall festival in the town we love, Marshall, Illinois!
